Life In The Delhi Metro
The Pulse of Delhi Metro
Red Line Of The Delhi Metro |
I am always happy to board the Delhi Metro whenever I need to travel within Delhi. The impeccable and unmatched comfort coupled with an incredible frequency of trains is a compelling reason for my loyalty to this ingenious mode of transport. Most of the times, I am busy listening to some foot tapping music on the radio. There are times when I am in the middle of an intriguing crossword puzzle or an unputdownable novel, so I carry my activities on board the Metro, immune as I am to the bedlam created by frenzied commuters. Nobody can now stop me from doing what I want to do while I am travelling in the Metro, not the cacophonous cry of a baby near me and not even the boisterous laughter of school and college teens standing over my head.
Even when I am busy doing my studies, I do occasionally get up to make way for old men and women and a few others who are in want of a seat more than I do. They bless me and I feel happy and blessed for the rest of the day.
One can keep oneself entertained just by being an observer to a myriad of hilarious acts taking place around the Metro. I was once sitting on a seat adjacent to the two “Ladies Only” seats which as the caption suggests are supposed to be reserved for adult females. On one of the two was sitting an adult male, just next to me. A woman politely asked me to get up and I immediately signalled towards the reserved seat next to me. The man gave me a scornful look as he got up with some difficulty. No sooner had he got up than another man pounced over and captured his territory. It happened so quickly that the poor woman didn’t even have time to say anything before the other one sat down. As I garnered enough will to stand up for the rest of my journey and was about to make way for her, another gentleman offered his seat to the lady and she finally heaved a sigh of relief. The man who was overthrown from his comfortable seat because of me was now standing right in front of me, constantly on a lookout for a vacant and unreserved place where he could build his fortress. Then his eyes fell on the two seats lying vacant, one just three seats to his left and the other four seats to his right. As he turned towards the left, I saw a kid almost flying out of the blue to grab that coveted seat, the slow adult being no match for the celerity of the kid. The adult was smart as he quickly did a 180 degree turn and ran for the other seat, only to see it slipping out of his hands to another kid. The destination station was about to arrive and the train was gradually emptying up. The man finally got his seat for the remaining three minutes of the journey.
As I got up along with my belongings to deboard from the train, I saw a happy family presumably going to have loads of fun and frolic in the nearby amusement park. At the same time, my busy eyes fell on a group of formally dressed businessmen probably going to attend a conference in the five star hotel near the station. As I swiped my travel card to leave the station premises, I wondered about the phenomenal ways in which the Delhi Metro has touched our lives and our hearts.
